Accessibility Statement
The Saffery Rotary Walk is for everyone, and so is this website. [Organisation name, for example: The Saffery Rotary Walk, organised by the Rotary Club of Guernsey] wants as many people as possible to be able to read, understand and use www.safferyrotarywalk.org.gg, whatever their abilities and whatever technology they use.
This statement applies to www.safferyrotarywalk.org.gg, including the Walk information pages, the news articles, the route stage pages, the gallery, and the contact and charity application forms.
1. How accessible this website is
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2, Level AA. WCAG is the international standard for accessible web content, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
The website has been designed and checked so that, for example:
- the text, buttons and links have strong colour contrast on every page we tested;
- every photo has a written description for people who cannot see it;
- headings follow a clear order, so you can move around the pages with a screen reader;
- you can use the site with a keyboard alone, links, buttons and form fields show a visible outline when selected, and a "Skip to main content" link appears when you first press the Tab key on any page;
- the pages adapt to narrow screens and to larger text, and you can zoom in without losing content or scrolling sideways;
- forms have visible labels, and required boxes are announced as required by screen readers;
- nothing on the site plays automatically or flashes, and the slideshows only move when you move them.
2. Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, because of the non-compliances listed below.
3. Content that is not fully accessible
The following content may not yet meet the standard. We are working to fix it.
- Videos. The site includes five videos hosted on Vimeo. We are checking that each has accurate captions and either audio description or a written alternative. Until then, some of them may not meet WCAG success criteria 1.2.2 (Captions), 1.2.3 and 1.2.5 (Audio Description). If you need a transcript or description of a video, contact us (section 6). We plan to complete this by [date].
- Walk booklet (PDF). The 2026 Walk Booklet PDF is not fully accessible to screen readers. Much of the same information is on the website's Walk and route pages. If you would like the booklet in another format, contact us (section 6). We plan to provide an accessible version by [date].
Content outside our control. Some tools on the site are provided by other organisations: the video player (Vimeo), the security check on our forms (Cloudflare Turnstile), the cookie notice and the language menu. We choose and set them up carefully, but we cannot change how they are built.
- Translation. The language menu uses an automatic translation service. The translations are machine-generated and may contain mistakes, so the English pages are the official version. We have marked each language name in the menu with its own language so screen readers read it correctly.
- Charity application form. The multi-step form is provided by a plug-in. We have corrected the coding problems we found, so that each step is named and required boxes are announced. We have not yet tested it with a range of screen readers; we plan to do so by [date]. If you cannot use the form, contact us (section 6) and we will take your application another way.
We have not claimed any "disproportionate burden" exemption.
4. Our commitment to keeping the site accessible
Accessibility is not a one-off job for us. We will:
- check every new page and every major change for accessibility before it goes live, using automated testing and checks by a person;
- review the whole site against the latest version of WCAG at least once a year, and again after any redesign or major change;
- keep up with new versions of WCAG and the European standard EN 301 549, and update the site and this statement when the standards change;
- write photo descriptions, headings and link text with accessibility in mind, and make sure everyone who edits the site knows how;
- make sure our own tools and suppliers meet the same standard, and ask them to fix any problems we find;
- listen to feedback from people who use the site, and fix reported problems as quickly as we can.
5. Standards and legal background
[Have a Guernsey legal adviser confirm this section before publishing.]
We follow WCAG 2.2 Level AA because it is the recognised international benchmark, and it is the standard behind the main accessibility rules that apply around us:
- Guernsey: the Prevention of Discrimination (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2022, which came into force on 1 October 2023, makes it unlawful to discriminate against people because of disability when providing goods and services, and expects service providers to make reasonable adjustments.
- United Kingdom: the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 require public sector websites to meet WCAG AA and to publish a statement like this one, and the Equality Act 2010 applies to organisations providing services in the UK. We are not a UK public sector body, but we have chosen to meet the same standard.
- European Union: the Web Accessibility Directive (EU) 2016/2102 and the European Accessibility Act (Directive (EU) 2019/882) use the European standard EN 301 549, which is built on WCAG. We welcome visitors and walkers from across the EU and want the site to work well for them.
The layout of this statement follows the model published by the UK government.
6. Tell us about problems, or ask for another format
If you find something on this website that you cannot use, or you need information in a different format (for example large print, a plain-text or easy-read version, an audio version, a transcript or a printed copy), please tell us:
- email: info@safferyrotarywalk.org.gg
- phone or voicemail: 07781 114999 (leave your name and number and we will call you back)
- the contact form on the Contact us page
Please tell us the web address of the page, what you were trying to do and what went wrong, and how you would like us to reply. We will reply within 48 hours. [Confirm this is what the team can commit to.] If the problem is something we can fix quickly, we will. If it will take longer, we will tell you when to expect a fix and, where we can, give you another way to get the information or take part, such as registering by phone.
7. If you are not happy with our reply
If you are not happy with how we respond, please write to [the Walk chairperson, name and contact details] and we will look into it again. You can also get independent advice and support from [Guernsey Disability Alliance, https://disabilityalliance.org.gg, or the body your legal adviser recommends]. [Add the Guernsey organisation or committee responsible for the Ordinance once confirmed.]
8. Technical information
This website is built with WordPress and the Breakdance page builder. It relies on HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and uses WAI-ARIA where the standard HTML is not enough. These technologies need to be supported by your browser and any assistive technology you use for the site to work as intended.
The site is designed to work with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on desktop, tablet and mobile.
9. How this statement was prepared
This statement was prepared on 16 October 2026. It is based on a self-assessment by [our web developer, Enrapture Limited] using automated testing (axe-core, WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA rules) on 24 pages and manual checks of colour contrast, headings, forms, keyboard focus, zoom and small-screen layout in Google Chrome. Problems found were corrected on the same day. Screen-reader testing and a full check of video captions are planned for [date].
This statement was last reviewed on 16 October 2026. We will review and update it at least once a year, and whenever we fix a problem listed above.
